Why we knock before opening mortuary door – C-River mortician

•How we speak to ‘stubborn’ occult corpses

By Emmanuel Unah

OKUNMI- THE proprietor of Emeka Mortuary, Okunmi Community, located at the suburbs of Ikom, Central senatorial district, Cross River State, Mr. Kalu Ben Chima, popularly called Emeka Ambulance, has revealed the spiritual combats morticians, now and again, go through with occultists and members of some secret societies before their corpses were embalmed in his mortuary.

•Mr Kalu Chima & •Emeka mortuary
The Arochukwu-born mortician, whose mortuary is located along Ikom-Calabar highway, confessed to NDV that dead bodies, especially those of occultists and members of secret societies “do give us trouble while being embalmed because their bodies have been ‘fortified’ by the devil or some spiritual forces.”

Power pass power

“In such cases, we have to pet and persuade them by talking to them to allow the chemicals to penetrate their bodies, but if they remain stubborn, we have to employ our own spiritual force and of course, power pass power and we can then embalm them,” he disclosed.

According to him, he learned the trade in Onitsha General Hospital, Anambra state, and had come to know that some dead bodies were so “powerful” such that they do not allow others to lie close to them and he was always careful when attending to such bodies.

Some corpses don’t allow others to lie near them

His words: “Some powerful people do not allow other dead bodies to lie close to them, so in the night, they will remove other bodies near them and dump them far from where they are or they would go to an isolated place and lie there – all dead bodies are not the same, which is why we knock before we enter there.”

Mind-boggling tales

Our reporter traveled from Calabar to Okunmi to meet Mr. Chima following some strange reports about corpses in his mortuary established in 2010.

A few months after it was established, there was an unsubstantiated story about a man, whose car broke down close to the mortuary late in the night and he decided to seek for place to spend the night, and knocked on the door of a house he saw light burning close by.

A security guard reportedly came out and gave him a mat to sleep in a section of the room, only for him to wake up the next morning and discovered that he slept among corpses and he instantly passed out. Another case was that while conveying a corpse, the mortician occasionally walked behind the ambulance, while the corpse drives the van and the bizarre- that he sells body parts of dead people and so on.

Chima confirmed some creepy stories and described others as hearsay. On the man who allegedly slept in the mortuary with corpses, he said it was not true and he does not keep security guards in the mortuary.

Corpses still have spiritual powers

His words: “The corpses may be dead, but they still possess some spiritual powers to protect themselves. We have about 100 corpses right now and 18 abandoned ones, but we keep the place open, both day and night, without any security and anybody, who attempts to do anything funny by going there to steal or do anything has himself to blame”.

He, however, described as false claims that some people sell parts of dead people or do have sex with them.

Sex with dead, a deadly affair

Chima asserted: “Do not think that because she is lying down there, she is finished and you can go and have sex with her. You will die also in a matter of hours or days and how can someone sell body parts of a corpse or water used in washing a corpse, such water is poisonous. People die from different ailments such as HIV/AIDS, and water used in washing their bodies is poisonous and any person who uses it will either die or contact sickness.”

On the report that he has rented crowd of women, who engage in bogus weeping when a person dies, he said the women were part of a specialized funeral services he offers.

Some people hire mourners before their death

He explained: “Some people do n

Open Letter To President Buhari By Cardinal Anthony Okogie

Dear Mr. President,
Last year, when you assumed office, the chant of “Change,” your campaign slogan, ushered you into the Presidential Villa.  Today, cries of “hunger” could be heard across the length and breadth of our vast country.
Nigerians hunger, not only for food, but also for good leadership, for peace, security, and justice.  This letter is to appeal to you to do something fast, and, if you are already doing something, to redouble your effort.
May it not be written on the pages of history that Nigerians die of starvation under your watch.   As President, you are the chief servant of the nation.  I, therefore, urge you to live up to the huge expectation of millions of Nigerians.  A stitch in time saves nine.
This is the second year of your administration.
You and your party promised to lead the masses to the Promised Land.   It is not an easy task to lead.  But by campaigning for this office, you offered to take the enormous task of leadership upon yourself. Nigerians are waiting for you to fulfill the promises you made during the campaign.
They voted you into office because of those promises. The introduction of town hall meetings is a commendable idea.  But in practice, you, not just your ministers, must converse with Nigerians.  You are the President. You must be accountable to them.  The buck stops on your desk.
Even if your administration has no magic wand at least give some words of encouragement.  On this same score, please instruct your ministers, and insist that they be sincere and polite at those town meetings.  Their sophistry will neither serve you nor Nigerians.
Mr. President, if you want to leave a credible legacy come 2019, in all sincerity, please retool your administration.  Change is desirable.  But it must be a change for the better.  Let this change be real.  Change is not real when old things that we ought to discard refuse to pass away.
You will need to take a critical look at your cabinet, at the policies and programs of your administration, and at those who help you to formulate and execute them.  You will need to take a critical look at the manner of appointments you have been making.
It is true that commonsense dictates that you appoint men and women you can trust.  But if most of the people you trust are from one section of the country and practice the same religion, then you and all of us are living in insecurity. The Nigerian economy has never been in a state as terrible as this.
You as President are like the pilot of an aircraft flying in turbulence.  Turbulent times bring the best or the worst out of a pilot.  We can no longer blame the turbulence on past administrations.  You know quite well that some of the officials of your administration served in previous dispensations.
Blame for what we have been experiencing is, in fact, bipartisan in character.  The entire political class needs to come together, irrespective of party differences, to acknowledge its collective guilt and to seek ways of saving the sinking ship that our country has become.
This cannot be done if some officials of your administration demonize and alienate members of the opposition.  If a large portion of the blame for the present situation is to be laid on the doorsteps of the entire political class, the search for a solution must involve everyone.
That is why no one should be alienated. All hands must be on deck. This is the time to revitalize moribund industries, reinvigorate our agriculture, make our country tourist and investor friendly, and enable our young men and women to find fulfillment by contributing to the common good.
None of these lofty goals can be achieved without good education.  On this particular issue, recent appointments you have made in the education sector raise a question: have you really appointed the best? Still, on education, it is important that our universities be allowed to use their own criteria to admit students.
It is a gross violation of the pri

Now there is no money to run government – Amaechi

Abuja – The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi on Tuesday appealed to Nigerians to be patient and give the administration more time to achieve its objectives.
Making the appeal while answering questions at the forum of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, Amaechi said:
Rotimi Amaechi
“We encountered challenges; were we expecting to encounter those challenges? yes; did we think that we will meet the quantum or volume of those challenges?
“We didn’t anticipate that things were this bad. We thought you go to government and there would be money for you to run government and others.
“Now you have the situation where there is no money to run government. I hate to use the word difficult; I hate to use the word impossible but we met things close to difficult and impossibility.
“That is why Nigerians are impatient; they want to see results and for them, change is not about change in structure, it is about change in their pocket.
“Because their pocket is getting dried and they wanted us to put some more resources in their pocket.
“Because of the structural changes that we want to put in place is not getting all that they want to get.
“ What I usually say to people is that we beg you to give us time; we will achieve our objective if you give us time and we will both thank God for that opportunity.’’
He gave an assurance that money recovered from the ongoing corruption fight, would be used to provide infrastructure.
According to him, the government has started paying contractors not appointed by the current administration, noting that such action represents service delivery to the people.

My contract with Chocolate City expired two years ago – Ice Prince

Popular rapper, Panshak Zamani, fondly known as Ice Prince, let out a bombshell during the week when he confirmed that he’s no longer signed to Chocolate City Entertainment, the label that spawned his music career. Although fans have been speculating on the status of his contract with the label for a while now, because his latest singles like ‘For Days’ and ‘Seasons’ do not bear the imprint of Choc City, it still came as a rude shock to many. The rapper was a guest on Cool FM’s Midday Oasis, where he revealed that his contract with the label expired two years ago and due to his personal relationship with the label owners, decided not to make it public. He however, made it clear that he still has some working relationship with them. This is even as he released a new single, ‘Chike’ featuring Korede Bello on Thursday.

Ice Prince, who is gearing up for the release of his third album tentatively titled, ‘Jos To The World’, now sits atop his own label, Super Cool Cats, which may soon be signing new acts.

Meanwhile, Ice Prince is the third act to depart Chocolate City in the past six months, following in the steps of Kahli Abdu & VHS Safari, and rapper M.

Kiss Daniel in love with YBNL first lady, Temmie Ovwasa

G-worldwide leading act, Kiss Daniel, has openly declared his affection for YBNL’s first female act, Temmie Ovwasa. The sensational singer, who recently launched his debut album with an album concert, resorted to social media to declare his love for the new YBNL nightingale. Temmie Ovwasa posted an acoustic rendition of Kiss Daniel’s latest single Mama on Instagram, which attracted Kiss Daniel’s attention. Basking in the euphoria of her musical dexterity and possibly physical beauty, a love-struck Kiss Daniel wrote: “I love her so much mehn! Perhaps my first industry crush.”  Who knows, maybe something good will come out of this. Our fingers are crossed and we’re watching.

Adekunle Gold Set To Quit YBNL

Few weeks ago, Olamide’s protégé, Lil Kesh, took a bow out of YBNL record label, to float his own label, YAGI, which is also the title of his newly released album. Shortly after, Olamide signed his first ever female act, Temmie Ovwasa, who has been making buzz on the airwaves with her first single Jabole.

However, after Lil Kesh’s exit, rumor making the rounds is that Orente singer, Adekunle Gold is next in line, as his record deal with YBNL expires anytime soon. Recall that he signed a two-year record deal with the Olamide-led record label, YBNL, just like Lil Kesh, Temmie and Viktoh. So, he may leave to float his own record label rumoured to be called ‘Gold Records’.  Though Adekunle Gold or his management have not made any official statement as to the authenticity of the rumour, but sources close to YBNL’s camp, claim there are speculations that the rumour will find reality as soon as Adekunle Gold drops his debut album sometime in June 2016.

Petrol price increment shows Buhari’s APC govt insensitive to Nigerians’ plight – Fayose

Ado - Ekiti - Ekiti State Governor, Mr
Ayodele Fayose has described the
increment of the unit price of premium
motor spirit (PMS) otherwise known as
petrol from N86.50 to N145, as insensitive
and demonstration of the level of hatred
the President Mohammadu Buhari led All
Progressives Congress (APC) government
had for Nigerians.

The governor, who said the over 70 per
cent increment was another vindication of
his predictions on what to expect in 2016,
added that it was now clear that the
scarcity of petrol being experienced in the
last three months was deliberately
orchestrated by the federal government
to pave way for the already conceived
increment.
According to his Special Assistant on
Public Communications and New Media, Lere
Olayinka, Governor Fayose said “Nigerians
are now left
at the mercy of political liars who took
over power by deception and are governing
by deceit.
He said he was waiting for the reaction of
those who took to the streets to protest
when fuel subsidy was removed by the Dr
Goodluck Jonathan administration in 2012,
urging labour unions in the country to
stand by their members always, not minding
the political
party in government.
He said; “When they were seeking for votes
from Nigerians, they promised to reduce
petrol pump price to from N87 to N45 per
litre, they promised to create three
million jobs per year, they said $1 will be
equal to N1 and above all, they promised
to pay unemployed youths N5, 000 stipend
and provide one meal a day to pupils
nationwide.
“Instead of fulfilling their promises, they
have increased petrol pump price to N145
per litre, increased electricity tariffs,
retrenched thousands of workers and
imposed untold hardships on Nigerians.
“As they did in 2012, if labour leaders do
not also stand up for the people at this
time, posterity will not forgive them. ”

Kaduna religious bill: Pastor Suleiman refers to El Rufai as Herod, says he will die

Few weeks after he declared that Kaduna state governor, Nasir El Rufai will die if he does not revoke the Religious Regulation Bill (read here), Edo state based pastor and the Senior Pastor of Omega Fire Ministries (OFM), Apostle Johnson Suleiman, while preaching in his church yesterday March 27th, reigned curses on El Rufai, saying he will die for daring to anger Christians.

During his sermon yesterday March 27th, Suleiman said

"I am not just running my mouth. In the 1999 constitution, Chapter 4, under the fundamental human rights, section 38th says that everyone has a freedom of thought, conscience and opinion and it says they are very free to exercise their religion either in a community, in public or or in private. Public means put your speakers anywhere. So the man is not just going against the scripture. He is going against the nation. He is going against the constitution and he says because he did it in Abuja, nothing happened. He entered a christian community in Kaduna and he says he will destroy life. He will die!"he said
He described El Rufai as the Herod of Kano, an imbecile and a barbarian whose mouth is bigger than his body
"The Herod of Kaduna. Your days are numbered. Churches marked for destruction by an imbecile. A barbarian. A man whose mouth is bigger than is body. He wants to rubbish Christianity and everybody is saying we should take it easy. To hell with everyone. If you hate the church I hate you If you stand against the church I fight you. The Herod of Kaduna, your days are numbered"he said

Shitte members deny kidnapping Army Colonel

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria also known as Shittes group have released a statement denying claims that they are responsible for the abduction of a Nigerian Colonel in Kaduna last Saturday.

Thisday Newspaper yesterday quoted an intelligence officer as saying that the kidnap might have been carried out by aggrieved members of the Islamic group who are still angry with the Nigerian Army over the December 2015 face off which led to the arrest of their leader Ibrahim El Zazakky and the death of over 50 of their members.

The group however says this is not true and that they have no hand in the abduction. See their press statement signed by the President, Media Forum of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Ibrahim Musa, below

“Our attention has been drawn to a false, unsubstantiated and mischievous claim, that looks more like a planned operation aimed at painting the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) black, of some ‘intelligence’ report that the IMN may plan kidnap of military officers for ransom for the release of our revered leader, His Eminence Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky. Typically, this was followed by the alleged kidnap of an Army officer in Kaduna with the Nigerian Army issuing statement calling on the public to give information that would lead to the arrest of the perpetrators. Soon, some media outlets were quick to quote these malicious sources linking the IMN with the alleged kidnap. We wish to categorically state here that the Islamic Movement in Nigeria under the leadership of His Eminence, Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky has never, is not and will never engage in any form of crime to meet any of its objectives. Crime and criminal activities are fundamentally sinful and are not in our character. The Islamic Movement knows that due to official administrative ineptitude and official negligence of constituted authority, a lot of crimes including kidnapping are prevalent in the country. As a religious body, the IMN condemns and preaches against all forms of crime. Therefore, it is virtually illogical and unreasonable for anyone to presume that the IMN would turn around to engage in such acts of immorality. It has conducted its activities in the most civilized manner and cannot in any way be derailed from that golden track record. IMN will therefore never be lured or diverted into any form of crime or violence. It is obvious that the government and its Army are going further with their plans of campaign of calumny and false propaganda against the Movement ranging from smear documentaries on Television networks, advertorials in daily newspapers, sponsoring fake non-governmental organizations and engagement of some very dubious characters to malign the IMN and its leadership, to engaging in organized crimes and attributing same to the Movement. The IMN is a peaceful mass Movement, with enlightened and responsible members. For close to four decades now, it has conducted its activities in the most civilized manner and cannot in any way be derailed from that golden track record. IMN will therefore never be lured or diverted into any form of crime or violence. We are forced to believe that the government and its Army are resorting to these vicious campaigns in desperation. Finally, we would like to use this platform to echo our call on the government and its Army to own up to their crimes and release the revered leader of the Movement Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky and other members unconditionally.”

ISIS terrorists crucify catholic priest on Good Friday

Sick ISIS terrorists have carried out their horrific threat to crucify a priest who was kidnapped by the jihadis earlier this month. Father Tom Uzhunnalil, a Salesian priest, was seized when four armed militants stormed an old people's home in Aden in Yemen on March 4.

His execution by the Islamist sect, using the same method used by the Romans on Jesus and marked on Good Friday every year, was confirmed at the Easter Vigil Mass by Cardinal Christoph Schonborn of Vienna.
Father Uzhunnalil was a native of India and had been the object of both prayers and diplomatic efforts since the March 4 raid where 16 Christian nuns and nurses were killed. Bishop Paul Hinder, who heads the Catholic Church in Yemen, said the Missionaries home had been the object of numerous threats but they refused to leave.

Pope Francis on Sunday honoured the slain nuns and reverend father as martyrs.

Woman hides 4 year old chld in bag on an Air France flight

A woman who flew into Paris from Istanbul this week was arrested after it was discovered that she had hidden a four-year-old girl in a bag on the plane, Air France said Wednesday.

The airline said the child who was travelling with the woman didn't have a plane ticket.
According to AFP reports, the woman was a resident of France who was in the process of adopting the child who was from Haiti.

Yakubu Gowon accepts 48 year old son after DNA test confirms he's the biolagical father

The 48 year legal tussle over the paternity of Jack Musa Gowon, the love child of former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has ended with Gowon accepting that he is Musa’s father after a DNA test confirmed this.

Musa who recently returned to Nigeria after spending 20 years in an American prison, is the love child born from a secret affair Gowon had with late Edith Ike-Okongwu.

In a statement he personally signed and released yesterday March 9th, General Gowon said,

“Following years of doubts and speculation, a DNA test was recently conducted to ascertain the paternity of Musa Gowon who recently returned to the country. The results of the tests were conclusive and they confirm his paternity. We, the family, are working to assist in his rehabilitation following a very difficult period in his life. As we look forward to the future with faith in God, we request that our privacy be respected. Thank you"
Musa and his late mother have been in a long legal battle with Gowon who refused to accept him as his son. He was born to Miss Edith Ike during the Nigeria Civil War in 1968, when Gowon was Head of the Federal Military Government and Commander-in-Chief of the federal forces.

Edith who later remarried, died of cancer several years ago.

Buhari speaks to Zuma on MTN fine

President Buhari today made his first public statement about the N780 million fine the National Communications Commission NCC, slammed on MTN over the failure to deactivate 5.1 million unregistered sim cards. Speaking at a joint press conference with visiting South African president Jacob Zuma, Buhari said the slow registration of Nigerians on the MTN network led to the death of many Nigerians during Boko Haram attacks. He said many terrorist now use unregistered lines ..
This is the first time I will personally as apresident be making a public comment about it.The concern of the federal government isbasically on the security and not the fineimposed on MTN. You know how theunregistered GSM are being used by terrorists.“And between 2009 and today, at least 10, 000Nigerians were killed by Boko Haram. That waswhy NCC asked MTN, Glo and the rest of themto register GSM. Unfortunately, MTN was very, very slow and contributed to the casualties”.

N322.4m to link a cable to the drivers’ restroom and other outrageous allocations in the 2016 budget

The Presidency budgeted N322.4 million to link
a cable to the drivers’ restroom in Aso Rock, a
review of the controversial 2016 budget by
Premium Times has revealed.
The online newspaper’s analysis has revealed
that the budget, already a source of
controversy, is replete with outrageous
proposals, repetitions and frivolous
allocations.
Last Saturday, apparently embarrassed by the
frivolity of the budget, an unnamed source
within the presidency told journalists that the
budget was padded by top civil servants who
he described as a ‘budget mafia’.
During yesterday’s defence of the budget of
his ministry, the Minister for Health Isaac
Adewole told the Senate that he was unaware
of some of the allocations in the budget.
Below are some of the outrageous proposals in
the budget:
The office of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo
was allocated more money for books than the
total of allocation for books for federal
polytechnics, 11 out of the which did not get
any allocation at all. While N4,906,822 was
proposed to be spent on books by Mr Osinbajo,
a total of N3,832,038 was proposed for the
polytechnics.
The State House Clinic allocated N3.2 billion
for equipment and is planning to build a VIP
wing at the clinic for N308 million.
N213,873,953 was proposed for the linking of a
cable from Guest House No 9 generator house
to the gate. Also, the presidency allocated
N618,604,265 for the installation of electrical
lighting and fittings at the villa, which equate
to spending N1.6 million daily installing
lighting and fittings and another N371,733,964
for the installation of electrical distribution
boards and other cables.
Buhari also proposed to renovate Aso Rock
Guest House for N387,980,200. N45 million was
earmarked for furniture.
Furthermore, a whopping N3.91 billion was
earmarked for the annual routine maintenance
of villa facilities. A breakdown of this amount
shows that the government plans to spend
N10.72 million daily on routine maintenance.
The President also proposed to spend
N22,321,880 to pay rent at the State House. It is
unclear whom the presidency is paying the
rent to.
